ST. LOUIS — First baseman Matt Adams of the St. Louis Cardinals will miss three to four months with a strained right quadriceps, the team announced Wednesday night.

Adams was injured legging out a double in the fifth inning of Tuesday night’s 6-4 win over Arizona. He limped off the field and was placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday.

Team officials acknowledged that Adams, who’s hitting .244 with four homers and 20 RBIs, could miss the remainder of the season.

Adams batted .288 with 15 homers and 68 RBIs last year, belting a three-run homer off National League Most Valuable Player Clayton Kershaw to eliminate the Los Angeles Dodgers from the NLDS in October.

Mark Reynolds will replace Adams as the everyday first baseman. General manager John Mozeliak said the team isn’t inclined to make a trade at this moment to beef up the position.
