At the outset of the San Francisco Giants’ postseason, their starting pitchers were no better than mediocre.
In fact, they were somewhat bad.
A far cry from the 2010 postseason in which the rotation carried the team to the championship. But, suddenly, the rotation has fixed itself. As October rolled along, starters began finding their groove.
The Giants carry a five-game win streak into Game 3 of the World Series, and the starters have had a 0.55 ERA in that stretch. The capper was Madison Bumgarner’s seven scoreless innings of two-run ball in the Giants’ 2-0 victory in Game 2.
“I mean, they’re good. They were good all year,” catcher Buster Posey said.
It started with Barry Zito’s breakout game against the Cardinals in the NLCS and resumed with Ryan Vogelsong and Matt Cain pitching solidly in the series’ final two games.
Then Zito threw another stellar game in the World Series opener, followed by Bumgarner on Thursday.
It’s the Giants’ first five-game postseason win streak in their history. They won four straight on five occasions.
