One day after severing ties with shortstop Everth Cabrera, the San Diego Padres added another middle-infield option Wednesday.
Veteran free agent Clint Barmes and the Padres agreed to a one-year deal with a team option for a second season, multiple media outlets reported. Financial terms were not known.
According to U-T San Diego, the contract could be completed this week if Barmes passes a physical exam.
Barmes, 35, hit .245 with a .328 on-base percentage, a .294 slugging percentage, no homers and seven RBIs in 48 games for the Pittsburgh Pirates this year. Over 12 major league seasons for the Colorado Rockies, Houston Astros and Pittsburgh, Barmes has a career .246/.295/.380 hitting line with 86 homers and 399 RBIs in 1,088 games.
He figures to serve as a backup to shortstop Alexi Amarista, the front-runner to replace Cabrera, who was non-tendered Tuesday after a year that included health and legal issues. Barmes also has extensive experience at second base and a handful of major league games at third base, first base and the outfield.
