The San Diego Padres non-tendered shortstop Everth Cabrera before the midnight deadline, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported, so Cabrera is now a free agent.
Cabrera led the National League in steals in 2012 with 44, and he was named to the All-Star team in 2013, when he hit .283 with 37 steals. But his batting average slipped to .232 with 18 steals in 2014.
He made $2.45 million as a first-year arbitration-eligible player in 2014.
He also had legal troubles and was suspended for PED use.
The Padres probably will turn the shortstop job over to Alexi Amarista full-time.
