Chase Headley re-signed with the New York Yankees, who acquired the third baseman from the San Diego Padres in July but feared he would find more money on the free agent market.

Headley’s deal is reportedly a four-year pact worth at least $50 million.

Headley’s return solidifies the position and pushes Alex Rodriguez into a designated hitter-first base role. Rodriguez did not play last season, when he served a 162-game suspension for admitted use of performance-enhancing drugs.

General manager Brian Cashman was not bullish on his chances to re-sign Headley last week in San Diego at the winter meetings, but said Sunday that Headley “wants to be a Yankee,” he told NBC New York.

The deal is likely to be announced Monday, according to CBS Sports.

“He was a tremendous acquisition in the second half. A great leader. A tremendous defender,” Cashman told NBC. “A switch-hitter with great discipline. He kind of checks off every box that we’d like a prototypical Yankee to look like. If we can find common ground, I’d like to have him man third base as we move forward.”

Headley, 30, is a .265 career hitter in eight seasons, including seven with San Diego and last season, when he played 77 games with the Padres and 58 in New York. He has 93 career home runs.
