The New York Yankees acquired former major league infielder Gregorio Petit from the Houston Astros on Wednesday in exchange for cash considerations.

The Yankees also announced that shortstop Brendan Ryan has a Grade 2 right calf strain that he suffered while pursuing a ball hit up the middle during Wednesday’s exhibition game. It’s unknown how long Ryan might be out.

The 30-year-old Petit, who was not going to make the Astros’ season-opening roster, will join the Yankees’ major league camp.

Last season with Houston, Petit batted .278 with two home runs and nine RBIs in 37 games. He also played in 85 games for Triple-A Oklahoma City and had 10 homers, 43 RBIs and a .297 average.

In 62 career major league games in parts of three seasons with the Astros and Oakland Athletics (2008-09), Petit has a .278 average with two homers and 10 RBIs.
