New York Mets right-hander Zack Wheeler has a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow, the team announced Monday.

The Mets have not yet committed to Tommy John surgery, but that is the likely treatment for such an injury.

The team statement said Wheeler underwent an MRI on Saturday in Port St. Lucie, Fla., which was also reviewed by team doctor David Altchek. Wheeler will travel to New York on Monday to confirm the diagnosis and discuss the next steps with Altchek at the Hospital for Special Surgery.

Wheeler, 24, went 11-11 with a 3.54 ERA in 32 starts for the Mets last season.

Wheeler’s news is the second major setback for the Mets pitching staff in two days.

On Sunday, left-hander reliever Josh Edgin elected to undergo Tommy John surgery and will miss the 2015 season.
