Twins interested in Mientkiewicz as manager

The Minnesota Twins were to interview Doug Mientkiewicz on Thursday in their search to replace fired Ron Gardenhire, USA Today reported.

The Twins also interviewed Hall of Famer Paul Molitor on Wednesday and are expected to speak with Terry Steinbach about the position.

Mientkiewicz, a former Minnesota player, managed the Twins’ high-Class A minor league team in Fort Myers, Fla., the past two seasons. His team won the Florida State League title this year. Mientkiewicz also was famously was involved in a brawl in 2013 in which he tackled the opposing team’s manager.

The 40-year-old last played in the major leagues in 2009. He was with the Twins as a player form 1998 to 2004 before he was traded to the Boston Red Sox.

Gardenhire managed the Twins for 13 years and posted a 1,068-1,039 record. After winning the American League Central in 2010, the Twins finished fourth or fifth in the division each of the past four seasons.
