Shortstop Jean Segura is returning to the Milwaukee Brewers after the death of his infant son.

Segura will be in Washington as the Brewers resume play Friday night against the Nationals after the four-day All-Star Game break. He left the team last weekend for the Dominican Republic after learning his 9-month-old son, Janniel, died.

“We’ll sit down with him (Friday) and just make sure everything is good before we activate him,” Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said.

Roenicke is unsure how much Segura will play and whether he will need some days off while coping with the situation. The Brewers weren’t expecting him back so soon, but he told Roenicke that baseball was a way to help him cope with the grief.

“We’ll see how it goes,” Roenicke said.

To open a roster spot for Segura, the Brewers placed infielder Jeff Bianchi on the 15-day disabled list with a right elbow strain.
