The Los Angeles Dodgers and catcher A.J. Ellis reached agreement on a one-year, $4.25 million contract on Tuesday.

Ellis, who was eligible for arbitration, received a $700,000 raise despite batting a career-low .191 last season with three home runs and 25 RBIs in 93 games while battling a knee injury and a sprained ankle.

Ellis is expected to be the backup catcher in 2015 behind Yasmani Grandal, who was acquired in the offseason from the San Diego Padres. Ellis is considered a clubhouse leader and has the support of Dodgers ace left-hander Clayton Kershaw.
