Dodgers happy to add help without subtracting top prospects

LOS ANGELES — Every team that made a move at last week’s trade deadline probably walked away happy with their moves.

But the Los Angeles Dodgers had reason to be doubly proud. While addressing needs in the rotation (Mat Latos and Alex Wood) and bullpen (Jim Johnson and Luis Avilan), they managed to add without subtracting any of their top-tier prospects. Four minor league pitchers were dealt to the Miami Marlins and Atlanta Braves, but none were among the Dodgers’ top prospects.

“In our position, with our directive to create a long-term sustainable situation, the more guys you get to keep while still accomplishing your goals (the better),” Dodgers general manager Farhan Zaidi said.

The Dodgers have two of the top-rated prospects in all of baseball — Triple-A shortstop Corey Seager and Double-A left-hander Julio Urias. Zaidi acknowledged those two were as close to untouchable as prospects get.

“You stop short of saying ‘untouchable’ just because you never know what opportunities are going to present themselves,” Zaidi said. “But … I couldn’t see any scenario where we move either of those players. That definitely bore itself out this trade deadline.”
