The Kansas City Royals avoided arbitration with right-hander Kelvin Herrera in 2015 and 2016, reaching agreement on a two-year, $4.15 million contract Thursday.

The 25-year-old Herrera has four years of arbitration eligibility as a Super Two qualifier. The new deal keeps him under team control through 2018.

Last season, Herrera posted a 1.41 ERA with a 4-3 record and 20 holds in 70 relief appearances for the Royals.

In the past three years with Kansas City, Herrera has become one of the top setup relievers in baseball. In 207 games starting with the 2012 season, he has a 13-14 record, five saves, 60 holds, 210 strikeouts and a 2.57 ERA.
