The Kansas City Royals avoided arbitration with Lorenzo Cain, reaching agreement with the outfielder on a one-year, $2.725 million contract.
The 28-year-old Cain asked for $3.6 million and the Royals offered $2 million when arbitration figures were exchanged earlier.
In 133 games last year, Cain batted .301 with five homers, 53 RBIs and 28 stolen bases. He has a career .279 batting average.
It was Cain’s first year of arbitration eligibility. The new contract keeps him under the Royals’ control until 2017.
