Detroit Tigers designated hitter Victor Martinez suffered a torn medial meniscus in his left knee during workouts and will undergo surgery next week, the team said Thursday.
Martinez was injured last week, the team said, and the knee is scheduled to be repaired by Dr. James Andrews on Tuesday in Pensacola, Fla. Recovery time for such a surgery is generally 4-6 weeks.
Martinez had surgery for a torn ACL in the same knee in 2012 — also suffered during offseason workouts — and missed the season.
Martinez, 36, hit .335 with 32 home runs and 103 RBIs in 2014 as Detroit won a fourth straight AL Central title. He finished second in American League MVP voting behind Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angels.
Martinez signed a four-year, $68 million contract this offseason and is set to be paid $14 million in 2015.
