Nearly three months after he underwent right ankle surgery, Detroit Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera is healing well, but he still might not be ready for the start of the 2015 season.

Tigers trainer Kevin Rand said Monday that Cabrera resumed weight-bearing activities last month on his right ankle, from which he had bone spurs removed and a stress fracture repaired in October. Cabrera also is doing upper-body training.

Cabrera’s next exam is scheduled for mid-February with Dr. Robert Anderson, who performed the operation in Charlotte, N.C.

“If everything continues to progress and his tests and diagnostics come back great, then hopefully he’ll be given the clearance for full weight-bearing at that time,” Rand said.

Rand said that Cabrera will not be at full strength for the start of spring training in late February.

Detroit opens its season April 6 against the visiting Minnesota Twins.

“That’s too far out right now,” Rand said. “First of all we have to get him clear to do the activities.”
