Right-handed pitcher Max Scherzer avoided an arbitration settlement with the Detroit Tigers by agreeing to a $6.725 million contract on Monday, multiple outlets reported.

Scherzer had asked for $7.4 million in arbitration, while the Tigers proposed a $6.05 million salary.

Scherzer, 28, went 16-7 with a 3.74 ERA last season for the Tigers, but he was particularly effective late in the season, when he was 8-2 with a 2.69 ERA.

Scherzer will be eligible for arbitration next winter and can become a free agency after the 2014 season.
