Bench coach Chip Hale was granted permission from the Oakland Athletics to interview for managerial openings with the Minnesota Twins and Arizona Diamondbacks.

Hale was scheduled to be in Phoenix on Tuesday to meet with general manager Dave Stewart. He was a finalist for the Seattle Mariners job that went to Lloyd McClendon last offseason.

Hale played for the Twins and the ties to the team are important. He is the first known candidate outside the organization. Coach Paul Molitor, Doug Mientkiewicz and Gene Glynn have current ties to the Twins and already interviewed for the post.

Hale, drafted by the Twins, played with the team from 1989 to 1996.

He also was a coach for the Diamondbacks from 2007-2009.

General manager Terry Ryan is not being as transparent with the interview process as other organizations have, but the Twins are also expected to wait until the postseason concludes to interview candidates with teams in the playoffs. Jose Oquendo of the St. Louis Cardinals is one suspected candidate.
