The Boston Red Sox and San Francisco Giants are among the candidates to land free agent right-handed starter James Shields, the Boston Globe reported.
According to the report, the New York Yankees are also a possibility.
Shields is reportedly seeking a five-year, $110 million deal.
Giants general manager Brian Sabean is not expected to meet with free agent starter Max Scherzer because he is seeking $200 million, according to multiple reports.
The Red Sox already traded for starters Rick Porcello and Wade Miley and signed starter Justin Masterson to a free-agent deal. However, they may also look to add Shields to further upgrade their rotation.
Shields, 33, was 14-8 with a 3.21 ERA and struck out 180 batters in 227 innings last season with the Kansas City Royals.
