Major League Baseball suspended New York Yankees pitcher Michael Pineda 10 games on Thursday “for possessing a foreign substance on his person” in Wednesday night’s game against the Boston Red Sox.

“I made a mistake,” Pineda said Thursday before the series finale at Fenway Park.

Pineda said he will not appeal the suspension, which is set to begin Thursday night. The Yankees made a series of roster moves to compensate. Pineda can be reinstated May 5.

Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell said such consequences should be expected by Pineda when he chose to “go down that path.”

“I’ll learn from this mistake. It won’t happen again,” Pineda said.

Pineda was ejected by home plate umpire Gerry Davis in the second inning of the 5-1 loss to the Red Sox after Farrell complained about a smear of something on the right side of Pineda’s neck.

—Outfielder Mark Trumbo was placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Tuesday, with a stress fracture in his left foot and the Arizona Diamondbacks recalled outfielder Roger Kieschnick from Triple-A Reno.

Trumbo, 28, was out of the Diamondbacks’ lineup Wednesday. He is tied for the National League lead with seven home runs and with 19 RBIs, was second in that category entering Thursday’s games.

—Cincinnati Reds closer Aroldis Chapman faced live hitters in batting practice Wednesday and could return to the team in the next two weeks.

Cleared to throw to hitters after missing more than one month with facial fractures, Chapman was described as being in midseason form by the Reds.

Chapman sustained fractures of his nose and a bone above his left eye March 19 when hit by a line drive off the bat of Salvador Perez of the Kansas City Royals. He threw 27 pitches from behind a protective screen.

—Two pitchers, left-hander Zac Rosscup and right-hander Neil Ramirez, were recalled from Triple-A Iowa by the Chicago Cubs before the series finale with the Diamondbacks.

Outfielder Justin Ruggiano was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a left hamstring strain and right-handed pitcher Blake Parker was optioned to Triple-A.

—Chicago White Sox second baseman Gordon Beckham was activated from the disabled list.

Beckham (strained oblique) was placed on the 15-day disabled list before the season began. He was injured during spring training and served a rehab stint at Double-A Birmingham.
