The Kansas City Royals’ appearance in the World Series last season paid off Monday when veteran pitcher Edinson Volquez agreed with the team on a two-year deal.
The 31-year-old Volquez went 13-7 with a 3.04 ERA last season to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates into the postseason as a wild-card entry. He made 31 starts for the Pirates and is expected to slide right into the Royals rotation.
The Royals’ march to the World Series attracted Volquez and definitely played a role in his decision.
“What I saw last year, why not be part of the team?” Volquez told the Kansas City Star. “I want to be here and help the team win some games and enjoy what they did last year.”
He signed a two-year deal worth a reported $20 million.
