The Chicago Cubs claimed right-handed pitcher Donn Roach off waivers from the San Diego Padres on Wednesday.

Roach, who turns 25 next month, went 1-0 with a 4.75 ERA over 30 1/3 innings in 16 appearances (one start) with the Padres last season, his first year in the major leagues.

Roach made the jump from Double-A in 2013 to earn a spot on San Diego’s Opening Day roster in 2014 before being optioned to Triple-A El Paso on June 3. He went 4-6 with a 5.24 ERA over 77 1/3 innings in 19 appearances (13 starts) the rest of the way.

Roach was selected in the third round of the 2010 draft by the Los Angeles Angels out of the University of Arizona. He was acquired by the Padres in 2012.

Roach is 32-26 with two saves and a 3.73 ERA over 449 1/3 innings in 126 minor league appearances (67 starts) covering five professional seasons.
