Los Angeles Dodgers starter Hyun-Jin Ryu will have shoulder surgery on Thursday and will not pitch this season, the team said Wednesday.

The left-hander developed a sore pitching shoulder in late March during spring training and has been unable to fill the starting spot the Dodgers had planned for him.

The 28-year-old Ryu has posted a 28-15 record in two seasons with the Dodgers. In 56 starts, he has logged a 3.17 ERA with 78 walks and 293 strikeouts.

The Dodgers have filled Ryu’s spot in the rotation with Mike Bolsinger and Carlos Frias.

—The Colorado Rockies demoted veteran outfielder Drew Stubbs to Triple-A Albuquerque and called up outfielder Brandon Barnes.

Stubbs, 30, is hitting .118 with two home runs and five RBIs while making $5.8 million. He has struck out 31 times in 56 plate appearances.

Barnes, 29, is hitting .205 with five homers, 12 RBIs and seven stolen bases for the Isotopes. He played in 132 games for the Rockies last season, hitting .257 with eight homers.

—The New York Yankees called up outfielder Slade Heathcott from Triple-A to take the roster spot from Jacoby Ellsbury, who went on the 15-day disabled list with a right knee sprain.

Ellsbury tweaked his knee swinging at a pitch in the fourth inning Tuesday against the Washington Nationals.

Ellsbury is hitting .324 in 37 games with one home run, six RBIs and 14 steals in 19 tries.

Heathcott, 24, has hit .285 with one homer and 17 RBIs at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

—The Oakland Athletics placed left-hander Drew Pomeranz on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained left AC joint.

Pomeranz (2-3, 4.40 ERA) left his start in the fifth inning Monday night with shoulder tightness.

The Athletics recalled right-hander Arnold Leon from Triple-A Nashville, where Leon is 0-2 with a 4.26 ERA in five starts for the Sounds. He made a major league debut April 22, pitching one inning against the Los Angeles Angels.

—The Boston Red Sox acquired right-hander John Cornely from the Atlanta Braves.

The Braves will receive cash considerations in return for Cornely, who had been designated for assignment by Atlanta on Tuesday. He will report to Triple-A Pawtucket.

Cornely, 26, tallied a 4.42 ERA in 18 1/3 innings for Triple-A Gwinnett this season. He made one major-league appearance, allowing four runs on three hits in one inning.
