DENVER — Shortstop Troy Tulowitzki will undergo a dry needling procedure on his left hip Monday in Philadelphia in an effort to recover from a left hip flexor strain. Before the Rockies 7-5 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates, Colorado head trainer Keith Dugger said the procedure would be done in Philadelphia by Dr. William Meyers, a leg and core muscle specialist, who performed a procedure to remove scar tissue from Tulowitzki’s groin in 2012.

Dry needling involves the use of very small needle to create bleeding in areas of discomfort and promote healing.

“It’s not a very invasive thing,” Dugger said. “We do it all the time here, and he’s had it done before. You use an ultrasound. You get in there where you have the original tear off the stump and just kind of create a little blood right there. You don’t want it to scar too much, which is why you don’t do PRP (plasma-rich platelet) or stem cell in there.”

Tulowitzki pulled up with soreness in his upper left thigh while running out a ground ball July 19 and was placed on the disabled list July 22 retroactive to July 20.

“We’ve sent his MRI out to several doctors, and he’s dealing with a soft-tissue strain and we need to take care of it,” Dugger said. “Any time you have a major muscle tear like he did before, there is an imbalance, no doubt about it.”

Tulowitzki’s current injury is to scar tissue that formed after he tore his left quadriceps tendon in 2008. Dugger said the dry needling procedure is not expected to alter the two- or three-week healing period for Tulowitzki.

Manager Walt Weiss said he saw no reason for alarm in Tulowitkzi’s trip East to see Meyers.

“I don’t think it changes anything,” Weiss said. “He’s going to see a guy that’s cut on him, maybe ease his mind about some things.”
