Indians add five to 40-man roster

The Cleveland Indians announced Thursday that they added five players to their 40-man roster.

The five are right-handed pitcher Cody Anderson, infielder Giovanny Urshela, right-handed pitcher Shawn Armstrong, catcher-infielder Tony Wolters and left-handed pitcher Ryan Merritt.

Anderson, 24, was named the club’s 2013 Minor League and Carolina League Pitcher of the Year after going 9-4 with a 2.34 ERA in 23 starts at Class A Carolina. He spent 2014 with Double-A Akron where he was 4-11 with a 5.44 ERA in 25 starts.

Armstrong, 24, spent the 2014 season between Double-A Akron and Triple-A Columbus, going a combined 6-2 with a 2.41 ERA in 49 relief appearances.

Merritt, 22, went 13-3 with a 2.58 ERA in 25 starts for the Class A Carolina Mudcats.

Urshela, 23, hit a combined .280 with 18 homers while splitting the 2014 season between Akron and Columbus.

Wolters, 22, hit .249 with one home run with Akron in 2014 before left knee soreness ended his season on July 26. He played 66 games as a catcher and 18 as a shortstop or second baseman.
