The Chicago White Sox and utility player Emilio Bonifacio reached agreement Thursday on a one-year, $4 million contract.

The deal calls for the 29-year-old to receive $3 million in 2015, with the White Sox holding a $4 million option for 2016 with a $1 million buyout.

To clear roster space for Bonifacio, the White Sox designated outfielder Jordan Danks for assignment.

In 110 games last year for the Chicago Cubs and the Atlanta Braves, Bonifacio batted .259 and had 26 stolen bases while splitting time between center field, second base, third base, right field, shortstop, left field and designated hitter.

In eight major league seasons, Bonifacio has a .262 career average with 164 stolen bases for the Arizona Diamondbacks, Washington Nationals, Miami Marlins, Toronto Blue Jays, Kansas City Royals, Cubs and Braves.

Danks has a career .227 batting average since he came to the major leagues with the White Sox in 2012.

Danks’ brother, John, is a starting pitcher for the White Sox.
