The Chicago Cubs signed right-hander Daniel Bard to a one-year minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
If Bard makes the major league club, his base salary reportedly would be $1 million plus incentives based on appearances. He would likely be used as a reliever.
Bard, 29, pitched in 211 games with the Boston Red Sox from 2009-13, posting a 3.67 ERA over 257 1/3 innings. Because of an arm injury, he made just four appearances with the Texas Rangers’ Class A Hickory team last year before he was released.
