Buck Showalter of the Baltimore Orioles was voted Manager of the Year in the American League for the third time in his career, the Baseball Writers Association of America announced on Tuesday night.

Showalter, who won the award with the Texas Rangers in 2004 and the New York Yankees in 1994, joined Bobby Cox and Tony La Russa (four each) and Dusty Baker, Jim Leyland and Lou Piniella (three each) as the only men to receive manager of the year awards three or more times.

The 2014 Orioles (96-66) won the American League East title and advanced to the American League Championship Series for the first time since 1997.

Showalter became the 37th manager in baseball history to reach 1,250 victories when the Orioles won the first game of a doubleheader against the Yankees on Sept. 12.

When the Orioles clinched the division title by beating Toronto on Sept. 16, he moved past Billy Martin into 36th place on the all-time victory list with 1,254 — third most among active managers.

Showalter claimed the second divisional title of his managerial career this season, also winning in 1995 with the Yankees . The Orioles became the fourth team Showalter took to the playoffs, joining the 2012 Orioles, 1999 Arizona Diamondbacks and 1995 Yankees.

The only other Orioles managers to be selected for the award were Davey Johnson in 1997 and Frank Robinson in 1989.
