CHICAGO — Chris Sale did not make history, but Chicago’s left-handed ace did pitch another gem Monday in the White Sox’s 4-2, come-from-behind victory over the Toronto Blue Jays at U.S. Cellular Field.

Sale was aiming to become the first pitcher in major league history to record at least 10 strikeouts in nine straight starts, but he finished with six in his 104-pitch complete-game victory.

The win came courtesy of a three-run, eighth-inning rally off Toronto starter Mark Buehrle, who threw a complete game and allowed no earned runs.

Melky Cabrera came through with a one-out double that plated two runs and provided the winning margin.

Reds 3, Nationals 2

WASHINGTON — Shortstop Eugenio Suarez hit a tiebreaking solo home run in the eighth inning, leading Cincinnati past Washington.

Suarez, who went 3-for-4 to raise his average to .329, broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth inning with a single to left field off Washington starter Doug Fister.

In the eighth, with the score 2-2, Suarez connected on an 0-2 pitch from Casey Janssen (0-2) that landed in the first few rows just inside the left field foul pole for his third home run of the year.

Astros 9, Indians 4

CLEVELAND — Preston Tucker had four hits, including a home run, and Dallas Keuchel pitched six solid innings as Houston beat Cleveland.

Keuchel (11-3) struck out eight, walked one and gave up three runs on nine hits. Tucker led a 16-hit Houston attack with two singles, a double, a home run and two RBIs.

Cleveland’s Carlos Carrasco (10-7), who came within one out of pitching a no-hitter in his previous start, gave up five runs on 10 hits in four innings.

Pirates 2, Padres 1

PITTSBURGH — Pedro Alvarez’s RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning rallied Pittsburgh past San Diego.

Alvarez’s second career game-ending hit gave the Pirates their eight victory in 10 games and pinned a loss on his father-in-law, Padres interim manager Pat Murphy.

Andrew McCutchen started the winning rally with a one-out walk off Brandon Maurer (5-2), moved to second on Jung Ho Kang’s single, took third on Francisco Cervelli’s flyout then scored when Alvarez grounded up a single up the middle.

Cardinals 6, Cubs 0

CHICAGO — Yadier Molina’s seventh-inning sacrifice fly produced the game’s first run, and John Lackey worked seven shutout innings as St. Louis beat Chicago.

Jon Lester (4-7) saw his bid for a no-hitter vanish in the seventh, and he took the loss, his fifth since May 27. Lester hasn’t won since a 4-1 decision over the Pittsburgh Pirates on May 16. He gave up two runs on two hits in seven innings.

Lackey (7-5) improved to 3-1 all-time against the Cubs as he allowed six hits, walked one and struck out four.

Twins 4, Orioles 2 (10 innings)

MINNEAPOLIS — Brian Dozier’s two-run homer with one out in the bottom of the 10th lifted Minnesota over Baltimore.

Dozier hit his 17th homer of the season on a 2-0 count from Tommy Hunter following a sharp single to center by Danny Santana.

Trevor May, appearing out of the bullpen for the first time this season, earned the win, pitching one scoreless inning.

Braves 5, Brewers 3

MILWAUKEE — Kelly Johnson hit his seventh home run of the season, and Matt Wisler struck out six over 5 2/3 innings as Atlanta beat Milwaukee.

The Brewers saw their eight-game winning streak end. They came into the game with 99 hits over a just-concluded, seven-game road trip, but they struggled early against Wisler (3-1), who allowed three runs on seven hits and a walk in his fourth career start.

A.J. Pierzynski had four hits, while Johnson, Nick Markakis, Cameron Maybin and Juan Uribe had two each for the Braves, who won for the fifth time in six games.

Mets 3, Giants 0

SAN FRANCISCO — Johnny Monell broke a scoreless tie with a two-run double during a three-run ninth inning, lifting New York to a victory over San Francisco.

Jonathon Niese pitched eight scoreless innings and combined with closer Jeurys Familia on a three-hit shutout as the Mets won for the third time in four games on their six-game Western swing.

The loss was the Giants’ seventh straight and dropped the defending World Series champions to 42-42, the first time they haven’t been over .500 since May 13.

Dodgers 10, Phillies 7

LOS ANGELES — Jimmy Rollins drove in the go-ahead runs in the seventh inning, and Los Angeles recorded a decision over Philadelphia.

Adrian Gonzalez and catcher Yasmani Grandal homered for the National League West-leading Dodgers, who increased their lead to five games over the Giants.

Freddy Galvis, Ryan Howard and Odubel Herrera hit long balls for the Phillies, who fell for the seventh time in eight games.

Tigers 12, Mariners 5

SEATTLE — Detroit erupted for 19 hits, including four solo home runs, in a rout of Seattle.

The Tigers homered four times off Seattle starter Hisashi Iwakuma before doing most of its damage against the Mariners’ bullpen in the sixth and seventh innings.

J.D. Martinez continued his hot streak, going 3-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs. Victor Martinez and Nick Castellanos each went 4-for-5 with a home run. Castellanos drove in four runs. Yoenis Cespedes also homered, and six Detroit players had multiple hits. The 19 hits were one short of the Tigers’ season high.

Rays at Royals, ppd., rain

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The game was rained out at Kauffman Stadium and will be made up as part of a day-night doubleheader Tuesday.
