The Buffalo Bills, whose ground game ranked 25th in the NFL last season, are about to beef up their backfield.
According to multiple media reports, Buffalo is set to acquire running back LeSean McCoy from the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for linebacker Kiko Alonso.
The trade won’t be finalized until the NFL’s new “year” starts March 10.
McCoy, 26, ranked third in the league last year with 1,319 rushing yards. He had 312 carries (4.2-yard average) and scored five touchdowns. In 2013, McCoy posted career highs with 314 carries for 1,607 yards, averaging 5.1 yards.
The Eagles’ second-round draft pick in 2009 out of Pitt, McCoy spent six seasons in Philadelphia and topped 1,000 yards four times. Overall, he compiled 1,461 carries for 6,792 yards (4.6 average) and 44 touchdowns.
McCoy will make $10.25 million this year, and he is signed through 2017.
Alonso, 24, missed last season after tearing an anterior cruciate ligament in July. He expects to be at full strength for the start of training camp, he told the Bills’ website last week.
The Bills selected Alonso in second round of the 2013 draft out of Oregon, where he was coached by current Eagles boss Chip Kelly. He compiled 159 tackles (third in the NFL) and four interceptions in 2013, and he was selected the Pro Football Writers’ Association Defensive Rookie of the Year. Alonso finished second in voting for the Associated Press Defensive Rookie of the Year.
