Atlanta Falcons left tackle Jake Matthews tried to test his injured ankle at practice Friday, but he was ruled out for Week 2 against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Matthews suffered the left ankle injury in the first half of last week’s 37-34 overtime win over the New Orleans Saints. He exited the stadium in a walking boot.

Matthews tested the ankle in Friday’s practice for the first time while working on planting with his left foot.

“Jake was able to come out here and work a little bit,” coach Mike Smith said after practice. “We really like the progress that he has made in his work with the trainers and coming out and working with us a little bit today.”

The Falcons selected Matthews with the No. 6 overall pick in the May draft out of Texas A&M. He began training camp as the starter at right tackle, then moved to left tackle when Sam Baker suffered a season-ending injury during the second exhibition game.

Gabe Carimi will start at left tackle for Matthews, with Lamar Holmes at right tackle.

Wide receiver Roddy White was officially listed as probable for Sunday’s game at Cincinnati after banging his left knee against the Saints. He was limited during the week.

White had five receptions for 72 yards and a touchdown in Week 1 despite suffering the injury.
