New York Yankees infielder-outfielder Martin Prado will miss the remainder of the season after undergoing an appendectomy on Tuesday morning.
The 30-year-old Prado, who was placed on the 60-day disabled list, was batting .316 with seven home runs and 16 RBIs in 37 games for the Yankees since he was acquired from the Arizona Diamondbacks at the trade deadline on July 31.
To take his spot on the roster, the Yankees signed minor leaguer Jose Pirela to a major league contract. Pirela could become the 57th player to see action this year for the Yankees, which would be a club record.
The Yankees are in the midst of a three-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays that ends Wednesday night. New York is 4 1/2 games out of the second wild-card spot in the American League playoff race.
Between the Diamondbacks and Yankees, Prado finished the season with a .282 batting average, 12 home runs and 58 RBIs.
