Milwaukee Brewers All-Star catcher Jonathan Lucroy could miss up to six weeks with a strained hamstring.

Lucroy, 28, was fourth in National League Most Valuable Player voting in 2014, but ended the season with hamstring issues. He hit 13 home runs last season and the Brewers said in January that there are plans to use Lucroy at first base against some left-handed pitchers.

If the “mild” hamstring issue persists, he could get more time in the infield rather than behind the plate.

The Brewers open the regular season April 6, but Lucroy could be rested all the way through spring training but the team said he plans to hit and throw.

Assistant general manager Gord Ash told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel Lucroy made the team aware of his right hamstring “concern” at his season-ending physical and followed up with the team in November to let them know it was still bothering him.

“When he came to the ‘On Deck’ (fan) event he saw (team physician) Dr. (William) Raasch on the morning of Feb. 1 and that examination was fine,” Ash told the newspaper. “There were no issues at that point. A week later, he had this concern. I can’t tell you what happened or how he did it or what was involved. But that was the chain of events.”
