Los Angeles Dodgers starter Hyun-Jin Ryu will rest his injured shoulder for two to three weeks and start the season on the disabled list.

Ryu returned to Los Angeles from spring training for an examination on Monday that determined there was no structural damage to the shoulder, according to a CBSSports.com report Tuesday.

The left-hander’s shoulder inflammation flared up Sunday while trying to throw and the Dodgers decided to take precautionary measures.

Ryu woke up with a sore shoulder last Tuesday after a Cactus League start. Diagnosed with inflammation in his pitching shoulder, Ryu received an injection but was still experiencing discomfort four days later when he tried throwing.

This is the third time in less than 12 months that Ryu was sidelined by shoulder pain. He went on the disabled list last April and May, missing 23 games. In September, he left his last start of the regular season after one inning with a sore shoulder. He underwent a contrast MRI that revealed inflammation once again but no structural damage in his shoulder. He returned to pitch in the Dodgers’ first-round playoff series three weeks later.

Ryu said the pain is not as bad this time but admitted he was frustrated by the recurring nature of the problem.

“For this season, I went through a lot of preparation over the wintertime,” he said through an interpreter. “But what can I do?”

Joe Wieland appears to be a candidate to take Ryu’s spot in the rotation until he returns.
