Los Angeles Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen had surgery on Tuesday to remove a growth from a bone on his foot, the team announced, and he could miss a month of the regular season.
Jansen will be on crutches for about 10 days and in a walking boot for the next three-to-four weeks. In all, it is expected to take 8-12 weeks before he is ready to pitch in a game, which could sideline him for the entire month of April.
The Dodgers said the growth was discovered when Kenley reported pain while running last week. An X-ray, MRI and CT scan showed the problem in the fifth metatarsal of his left foot.
Jansen, 27, had 44 saves in 49 opportunities in 2014, when he had a 2.76 ERA, with 101 strikeouts and 19 walks in 65 1/3 innings.
With Jansen sidelined, the Dodgers may try to sign a free-agent reliever.
