Detroit Tigers designated hitter Victor Martinez underwent surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee on Tuesday and the team is hopeful he’ll be recovered for the start of the 2015 season.

The Tigers said after the surgery performed by Dr. James Andrews in Pensacola, Fla., that they anticipate Martinez resuming full activity in four to six weeks. Detroit’s season opener is less than two months away on April 6 against the Minnesota Twins.

“We are very happy the surgery went well and that Victor will be ready to compete for the start of the 2015 season,” Tigers general manager David Dombrowski said.

The 36-year-old Martinez injured the knee during offseason workouts two weeks ago.

Last season, the switch-hitting Martinez finished as the runner-up in the American League MVP voting to Angels outfielder Mike Trout after batting .335 with 32 home runs and 103 RBIs. He signed a four-year, $68 million contract with the Tigers in November.
