CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Indians got some good news prior to their 4-2 win over the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday.
Right-hander Carlos Carrasco, who was hit in the head by a line drive in Tuesday’s game, will not be placed on the disabled list. In fact, Carrasco isn’t even going to miss a start.
“For everything that happened, it’s pretty miraculous,” said Indians manager Terry Francona.
Carrasco was hit in the head by a line drive off the bat of White Sox outfielder Melky Cabrera in the first inning of Tuesday’s game. X-rays were negative, and Carrasco showed no symptoms of a concussion or head injury, although, “his jaw is sore on both sides,” said Francona.
The ball hit Carrasco on the right side of the face, near his ear. He has a bruised jaw, but there are no cuts or abrasions, and on Wednesday, the day after, there was no swelling.
“Everything is OK,” said Carrasco. “Nothing was broken. I’m just sore.
“I don’t remember too much about it. I saw the ball coming at me and I tried to catch it, but it was too fast. I remember the ball coming, but after it hit me I don’t remember anything. Everything got blurry and I kind of blacked out.”
By Wednesday, however, Carrasco was feeling much better, to the point that Francona said the plan now is to keep Carrasco in the rotation. Carrasco will be given an extra day off, but he will make his next scheduled start Monday in Chicago.
