The University of Florida will be without tight end Jake McGee for the rest of this season because of a broken tibia and fibula.

McGee, a transfer from the University of Virginia, was injured during Saturday’s 65-0 pounding of Eastern Michigan.

McGee already had successful surgery and will begin rehab soon.

“So disappointed for him, a guy that came in here and, very difficult to come into a situation for one year,” coach Will Muschamp said. “He has done it as well as you can imagine. … This guy is a total team guy. Tough guy.”

McGee was carted off the field in the second quarter after an Eastern Michigan player rolled on McGee’s leg after being blocked and pushed to the ground.

McGee led the Cavaliers in receiving last year, but decided to transfer to Florida.

Clay Burton has been No. 1 on the depth chart at tight end and will continue in that role. McGee’s loss makes the Gators much thinner at the position.

McGee is ranked No. 9 among tight ends by NFLDraftScout.com and projects as a fifth- or sixth-round pick.
