Although the news that Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel won’t be available to the media this week is getting most of the attention, the absence of the Aggies starting safety may have a bigger impact on Saturday’s game against No. 1 Alabama.

The No. 6 Aggies had hopes that their defense, which had been depleted by injuries and suspensions, would be at full strength for Saturday’s game in College Station, Texas. But coach Kevin Sumlin said Tuesday that starting safety Floyd Raven will not play in the game.

Raven injured his collarbone in A&M’s win over Sam Houston State Saturday. Sumlin did not know when Raven would return.

Meanwhile, Manziel has been advised by his attorneys and his family not to speak to the media in the days leading up to the Alabama game, according to ESPN.

Texas A&M has gone along with that request and informed media outlets of the decision.

Manziel, last year’s Heisman Trophy winner, led the Aggies to an upset of Alabama last season, and has been the subject of much debate this season because of allegations he accepted money for signing autographs.
