Mississippi State senior center Dillon Day was suspended by the Southeastern Conference for stomping on an LSU player during Saturday night’s game in Baton Rouge, La.

The SEC announced the punished on Tuesday. Day will sit out the Bulldogs’ Oct. 4 game at home against Texas A&M.

Day, who started 12 games for Mississippi State last season, missed one game in 2013 after he was suspended for the same reason — stomping on an Auburn player.

“This action is the result of multiple flagrant and unsportsmanlike acts during the game, as well as previous disciplinary action for similar behavior,” SEC commissioner Mike Slive said. “This action is taken in accordance with Southeastern Conference Constitution.

“Article 4.4.2 (d) which states that a student-athlete may be suspended if it is determined that the student-athlete has committed a flagrant or unsportsmanlike act.”

Day wrote a letter of apology to Mississippi State fans that was posted on social media Monday. In it, he contended that he was “wrongfully accused of intentionally stomping on a player.” He said he was hustling on the play and unable to slow down in time to avoid the misstep.

Video appeared to indicate that landing on another player was avoidable, leading to the SEC’s decision.
