Alabama’s C.J. Mosley won the Butkus Award on Sunday, which goes to the nation’s top linebacker.
Mosley led the Crimson Tide with 102 tackles and was the leader of the SEC’s top defense.
Mosley received the award at Alabama’s postseason football banquet, with award namesake Dick Butkus in attendance, according to al.com.
“This year’s college linebacker class was among the best in history,” the award’s selection committee said in a statement. “Mosley’s combination of instincts, range, playmaking ability, on-field leadership and work ethic distinguished his performance. His selfless contributions on special teams and in the community speak to his strength of character and support the Butkus Award mission.”
Mosley was selected over finalists Anthony Barr of UCLA, Stanford’s Shayne Skov, Buffalo’s Khalil Mack and Ohio State’s Ryan Shazier.
Mosley also had nine tackles for loss, eight quarterback hurries and five pass breakups. He was named the team’s defensive player of the week by his coaches in 11 of 12 games.
The senior is ranked the No. 15 overall prospect and No. 3 linebacker, according to NFLDraftScout.com.
