Notre Dame nose guard Louis Nix III underwent season-ending knee surgery for a torn meniscus on Thursday, coach Brian Kelly announced.

Nix will miss the Fighting Irish’s final two regular-season games against BYU on Saturday and at Stanford.

The knee had bothered the fourth-year junior since the BCS Championship game in January. It caused him problems again in the Oct. 19 game against USC and he missed the next two games against Air Force and Navy.

Nix returned to play against Pittsburgh on Nov. 9 and it appeared he would attempt to finish the season before opting for surgery. The Irish had a bye last week.

Nix is eligible to return to Notre Dame next season, but he could be headed to the NFL. The 6-foot-2, 352-pound Nix is projected as a first-round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft.
