The University of Alabama-Birmingham will reinstate its football program, according to reports Monday.

UAB president Ray Watts, who announced the dismissal of the sport just six months ago, was prepared to file notice to the NCAA that football is returning to the school.

The Blazers football program was cut following the 2014 season for budgetary reasons. UAB would likely not play this upcoming season, returning to the field in 2016, according to ESPN.com.

Last December, UAB became the first Division I, Football Bowl Series (FBS) school to drop football in nearly two decades.

The school received a financial review last month. The report by College Sports Solutions, commissioned by the school’s Athletic Assessment Task Force, projected the cost to maintain current athletic programs and reinstate the football, rifle and bowling programs, which were shut down earlier this year.

UAB supporters made almost $6 million in pledges last month to bring back football and the two other programs.
