Quarterback Joel Stave started all 13 games last season for the Wisconsin Badgers, and has gotten the starting nod 19 times in his career.

But last season’s 22 touchdowns and nearly 3,000 passing yards were not enough to convince head coach Gary Andersen to hand Stave the job for this season.

And on Friday, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported that Tanner McEvoy, a redshirt junior transfer from Arizona Western College, would start the Badgers’ opener against LSU on Aug. 30 in Houston.

In one season at Arizona Western, McEvoy, who redshirted one season at South Carolina, threw 25 touchdown passes and ran for another six scores.

The 6-foot-6, 220-pound McEvoy struggled last summer at quarterback and moved to the defensive side of the ball and played in 10 games last season as a safety; he started three of those games.

He moved back to quarterback this past spring when Stave was sidelined with a shoulder injury suffered in the Capital One Bowl.
