Ohio State coach Urban Meyer confirmed Monday that quarterback J.T. Barrett will not play in Saturday’s spring game.

Barrett suffered a fractured ankle in the Buckeyes’ regular-season finale against Michigan last year. Barrett had screws removed in February, but he has been a non-contact participant in practices this spring.

Quarterback Braxton Miller is continuing his recovery from shoulder surgery that cost him the entire 2014 season. Miller finished ninth in the Heisman Trophy voting two years ago and was one of the top candidates last year before his injury.

Cardale Jones, the Buckeyes’ third-string quarterback at the start of last season, led Ohio State to the national title.

With Miller and Barrett sidelined, Jones will go against redshirt freshman Stephen Collier in the spring game this weekend.

“I don’t know who our quarterback is going to be (this fall),” Meyer said. The quarterback rotation would be an “Aug. 15-type question,” the coach added.

Ohio State opens its season against Virginia Tech on Sept. 7.
