Oklahoma head football coach Bob Stoops is on the verge of joining the $5 million a year club.

Oklahoma’s Board of Regents is expected to approve the pay increase when it meets Wednesday.

The deal, according to multiple reports, would make Stoops the second-highest paid college coach only trailing Alabama’s Nick Saban.

After the Sooners defeated the Crimson Tide in last year’s Sugar Bowl, a handful of NFL teams courted Stoops. The university believed the time was right to offer the pay increase to keep Stoops from bolting.

Stoops’ current contract pays the 53-year-old $4.74 million per year and runs through 2020. Since taking over the OU program in 1999, Stoops has compiled a 160-39 overall record and a 99-24 record in Big 12 play. He has guided the Sooners to one national championship and eight conference titles.
