Clemson suspended returning starters Corey Crawford and David Beasley and two other players for their 2014 season opener against Georgia because of a violation of team rules.

Offensive lineman Garry Peters and cornerback Shaq Anthony also will miss the opener, Tigers coach Dabo Swinney announced Tuesday.

“I am disappointed to announce that these young men will miss the 2014 opener at Georgia,” Swinney said. “A huge part of our program is teaching accountability, responsibility and that there are consequences for your actions. These are four good young men, but they broke a team rule and as a result, they will each miss a game. I am hopeful that they will learn and grow from this and have a great 2014 season on and off the field.”

Crawford, a defensive lineman, hed 10.5 tackles for loss and three sacks in 12 starts last season.

Beasley started seven games at left guard last year and Anthony made three starts at right tackle. Peters was as a backup cornerback last season who is expected to compete for a starting job in 2014.

None of the players were arrested, The Post and Courier reported in Charleston, S.C.
